As a result of the attack on Tether , 30.95 million USDT tokens, equivalent to the dollar, were stolen yesterday. This news caused a decrease in bitcoin by $ 300, and also served as food for the next explosion of charges against the owners of the Tether system – in fact, the Bitfinex exchange.
It is assumed that the own purse of the Tether system was cracked by the same hacker or group that had already been seen in other major hacking of previous years, as a result of which the crypto currency was stolen by millions of dollars, and by today’s rate this amount has increased tens of times.
At the moment, the episode with Bitstamp, which occurred in 2015, is considered reliable. Then, as a result of the attack, 19,000 BTC was withdrawn (at that time about $ 5 million).
The investigation was conducted by the user SpeedflyChris on Reddit. He found a link between the events of 2015 and today’s “robbery” Tether. It is that the purse that was used to get the funds stolen from Bitstamp, forwarded them to the same address where the money stolen from Tether was received.
Further, SpeedflyChris finds a major transfer to 12,000 BTC from the Chinese exchange Huobi in 2015 and puts forward a version that the Chinese stock exchange has also been hacked. However, the Huobi administration denies the fact of hacking and claims that these were normal transactions. But who needed to display 12,000 BTC, unite them with bitcoins stolen from the Bitstamp exchange, and transfer all of them in batches of 1,000 BTC to the BTC-e exchange? Probably, Huobi hid the “shallow” on the scale of hacking at that time, so as not to create panic among customers.
Further, the connection of these wallets with the LocalBitcoins service was found, where a small part of the stolen bitcoins was sold. However, it is highly unlikely that such skilled hackers would have allowed themselves to be so rudely exposed. After all, if LocalBitcoins have logs, then the chances of tracking down intruders are dramatically increasing. Theoretically, the intelligence services have enough data to try and track those behind it all.
After a while, a post appeared on Reddit , the author of which writes that he purchased 10 million USDT, which turned out to be part of the recently stolen and after breaking of the blocked tokens. Now the author of the message tries to understand what to do.
